Lanta Orchid Nursery
Lanta Orchid Nursery is a combination of an orchid farm and an exhibition, that shows all stages of nursing orchids, from the minuscule seeds to the flowering orchid plant on Koh Lanta Island. With more than 27 000 species, orchids are the biggest family in the vegetable kingdom, but much bigger is the number of hybrids, from which more than 50 000 have been described.
Discover the mystery of the orchids on Koh Lanta Island and learn why you cannot buy seeds to grow them. Besides some hybrids with their large and long-lasting flowers, Lanta Orchid Nursery concentrates on native orchids of Thailand and their reproduction. Only a very limited number of plants, that were grown from seeds are available for sale.
As most native Thai orchids bear flowers only one time per year, a small exhibition with pictures of several orchids in their natural habitat and from our nursery helps visitors to understand the complicated life cycle of the orchid family.
With the exception of the glacial and arid deserts orchids are growing everywhere in the world, even on Greenland some species can be found. In the tropics orchids are extremely numerous and colourful and are often seen as characteristic for this region. In Thailand alone more than 1100 different orchid species can be found.
Lanta Orchid Nursery also has a wide range of souvenirs available, postcards, jewellery, artificial orchids and bottles with living orchids. They are grown from seeds in a sterile bottle and therefore exempted from any CITES regulation. They contain 4 plants and normally a choice of 5 or 6 different species is in stock. Each bottle comes with a detailed instruction for care of orchid seedlings in English, Swedish, German, French, Czech and Russian language. Miss Udorn Sunshine, the famous perfume and the only one that uses orchids as raw material is also for sale.
Lanta Orchid Nursery is located in the mountains above Lanta Long Beach opposite Elephant Trekking on Koh Lanta Island in Krabi Province.
